Male Figure Skater Comes Out:
Johnny Weir is an American figure skater. He is a three-time U.S. National Champion (2004–2006), the 2008 World bronze medalist, a two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, and the 2001 World Junior Champion. As of April 2010, Weir was ranked 12th in the world by the International Skating Union. Last year, he was chosen to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he did worse than expected: a disappointing 6th place overall. Although this sounds amazing to average skating like myself, to Johnny boy and his coaches this was crushing.
After the conclusion of the Olympics, news starts breaking through magazines and gossip websites that “Johnny Weir is gay”. Wow, a male figure skater who over the last 7 years has won medals internationally is gay? I don’t believe it?! Honestly, I mean that confession was about as shocking as when Adam Lambert came out!
What is the moral of this story? As a celebrity of any kind, take something from your personal life and deny it for years, then if you fail at what you are supposed to be good at, “come out” with whatever it is that you have been hiding and you will again see your face in the news. Well played Johnny…well played.
