I definitely shouldn’t be allowed to wear white. What was I thinking wearing white today of all days when I’m planning on making a 5 hour trek upstate with little or no access to cleaning products and a high “spill rate” seeing as how I’m going to be trying to drink coffee and probably eat something ridiculous like a meatball grinder on the NY Thruway. Not only that, but I fancy myself a “minimalist packer”. Why lug around more than you need. I waste time doing a lot of things, but wasting time packing? Nope, not for me. I’m not into spending the extra time and energy packing, unpacking, carrying a heavier bag, wasting space in the car, and ultimately shortening your vacation from all the time you have to spend deciding what to wear when your at your desired location.
To avoid these problems, I like to do a little something called “POPUMOT”, pronounced pop-u-mut. It stands for “Putting Off Packing Until Morning Of Trip”. Probably not my best idea, but I’ll tell you one thing, I did NOT waste any time. I find that the best way to practice POPUMUT is to take a shower to clear your mind (remember, if you’re practicing POPUMUT, its probably mad early, so you’ll need to wake up a little bit at least). Then get back into bed and make your list. After you feel comfortable with your list, you can take a small nap, but make sure you set your alarm for at least 30 minutes before you need to hit the road so you have enough time to pack and get ready for the day. I find that the nap gives your brain a chance to think and make sure your not missing anything. Once you wake up, look over your list again and pack your bag. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR BAG THAT ISN’T ON THE LIST!! Oh, and plan on wearing some of your “key pieces” that will take up too much room in your bag (such as your sweatshirt or jeans).
My list looked like this for a Friday – Sunday weekend trip:
And I’m wearing a pair of jeans and have on a white tank top, white t-shirt, and grey hoodie. I figured tomorrow for the First Communion I’d wear the dress and flats with the sweater, then when I came home I could throw on my jeans and tank top and continue wearing the sweater. Then I have my cropped yoga pants and t-shirt to wear to bed (both nights). The yoga pants and t-shirt are really the chameleon of this travel wardrobe though because they can double as workout clothes or driving-home clothes in a pinch. This vacation I refused to fall into the trap many people can’t avoid: bringing a set of work out clothes for each day I’m on vacation. The intentions of the people who do this are good (I know because I’ve done it many times), but in reality, this is a rookie move. Then I have the one extra shirt for the drive home. Now, when I’m on vacation I don’t have to make any choices whatsoever. It’s actually a genius plan…unless you’re me.
So here I am thinking I’m all cool and ready for the weekend and this shit happens. It pretty much messes up my game plan. Don’t worry though, I made it work. I had to pick up my sister to bring her with me to NY, so since she is similarly sized and shaped like me, I raided her closet for some back up provisions…Generally speaking, I like to call this “Plan B”. She is not always as enthusiastic about Plan B as I am, but that’s ok, I brought enough enthusiasm to go around! 😉
